What is Soma?
The word Soma comes from Sanskrit. It is derived from the root “sav” or “seu”, which means to press, extract, or distill. Traditionally, Soma referred to the juice extracted from a sacred plant through careful preparation.
The very meaning of the word reflects process and intention. This idea of extraction, refinement, and mindful use continues to shape how we think about plant-based formulations today.
In Ayurvedic understanding, Soma is the counterpart of Agni, the digestive fire. Where Agni burns, purifies, and transforms, Soma cools, replenishes, and sustains. In Vedic thought, Soma is also identified with the Moon - Chandra, the celestial body associated with cooling, with calm, with the gentle restoration of what the heat of daily life depletes. Ancient physicians also called it amrita, the nectar of restoration.
This is the understanding that sits at the heart of Somasutra Wellness.
